San Paolo Maggiore

At the corner of via dei Tribunali and via San Gregorio Armeno (the Christmas alley) there is San Paolo Maggiore church.  Originally this church was a temple in the centre of the ancient greek city.  In 1538 it was transformed into a church by the Theatine fathers, a religious order.  A few parts of the old temple have survived, such as the Corinthian columns of the façade.  The interior of the church is very richly decorated, despite the damage of a bomb in 1943.  Here you can find frescoes on the ceiling by Massimo Stanzione, Francesco Solimena and Belisario Corenzio.  There are also paintings on the walls by the Tuscan artist Marco Pino and sculptures by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro.
